Electrolytes

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge, are found in blood, urine, and sweat, and are very important for many vital processes that keep the body functioning properly. They regulate the nervous system and muscle function, balance the pH and blood pressure, hydrate the body and help rebuild damaged tissues.

The most common electrolytes found in the body are sodium, potassium and calcium. Sodium and potassium are involved in fluid balance and blood pressure control. Calcium, sodium, and potassium are necessary for muscle contraction. Heart, muscle and nerve cells use electrolytes to transport electrical impulses to other cells. The correct balance of the different electrolytes is vital for the healthy function of the body.

Sometimes, blood electrolyte levels may be too high or too low, which leads to an imbalance; this often occurs due to dehydration caused by vomiting, diarrhea, excessive sweating (due to extreme heat or long periods of physical activity in the heat), excessive alcohol intake, starvation. Some symptoms of electrolyte imbalance are: excessive tiredness, fast or irregular heartbeat, numbness and tingling, confusion, muscle weakness and cramping, headaches and nervous system disorders.

The best way to achieve and maintain an electrolyte balance is to stay hydrated and follow a healthy diet. Electrolytes are commonly found in fruits, vegetables, dairy products, sports drinks, nuts, seeds, grains, among other foods.
