Yoga as a Form of Exercise

Yoga is a form of exercise consisting of poses called “asanas” and breathing techniques that improve physical and mental well-being. The asanas are designed to increase flexibility, tone muscles, and strengthen bones.

Today’s Yoga comes from the ancient Indian discipline of Haṭha Yoga, which teaches mastery of the body and mind. The Sanskrit word “Yoga” means “to join or unite” because Yoga is a practice that aims to unify body, mind, and spirit.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, Yoga offers many other physical and mental health benefits: it reduces anxiety and stress, improves the body’s coordination and balance, regulates blood pressure, supports joint health, and prevents injury. Besides, you can practice Yoga almost anywhere and it does not require special equipment.

These are some of the main Yoga asanas:

Sukhasana: This asana improves blood circulation in the hips, legs, spine, back, and pelvic area.

Dandasana: This Yoga pose stretches the hamstrings and calves, and helps you improve your body posture.

Trikonasana: It stretches and strengthens thighs, groins, hamstrings, hips, knees, calves, and ankles, and stimulates all abdominal organs.

Navasana: It tones and strengthens the abdominal muscles, stretches the hamstrings and strengthens the spine and hip flexors. It also improves balance.

Sarvangasana: This asana stretches and strengthens the shoulders and neck, improves blood circulation, and stimulates the thyroid glands.
