Beware of Caffeine!

Caffeine is an alkaloid that acts as a psychoactive drug; in fact, it is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world, and of course who consumes it frequently develops a dependence on this substance.

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that restores the level of alertness and eliminates sleepiness. People usually consume it as a stimulant and energizer, to stay awake and fight fatigue.

It is consumed mainly through coffee (hence the name caffeine), but other beverages contain it, such as cola and energy drinks.

Excessive intake of caffeine is very harmful to health. Here are some of its most negative effects:

  • Caffeine raises blood pressure and can cause tachycardia or arrhythmia; therefore, it should not be consumed by people with hypertension problems or heart problems in general.
  • It interferes with calcium absorption and metabolism, which can cause osteoporosis.
  • Caffeine can cause some gastrointestinal problems. People with gastric and/or intestinal ulcers should not consume it.
  • It produces anxiety, irritability, and sleep disorders.
  • Caffeine has diuretic effects, so it can cause dehydration.

Children should not consume caffeine, it is not recommended that teenagers consume it, and adults should only consume it moderately.
